When Snake Eyes was originally formed they performed under the name “Justin Tyme” and they played popular east valley nightclubs. During the 90’s the band switched to a private event format and never looked back. The band’s formative leader Don Marovich has been with the group for the duration, and plays guitar, and sings most lead vocals.
Other members include Bruce Stodola, drummer, who also toured with Turning Point. Glenn Bailey plays the Keyboards, guitar, and a few other instruments, and joined the group in their early days. Glenn adds the “frosting” to the cake. On bass guitar, fresh from a tour of duty in Nashville, is John Stewart. John played with Snake Eyes in the 90’s as well, and is a top shelf performer. All the musicians in this band are “national” quality artists.
The Snake Eyes repertoire is quite diverse. Equally flexible are the entertainment options. You can get any combination of instrumental and vocal presentations from a solo act, to the regular four-piece band, and all the way up to a ten-piece dynamo. Never leave the fun-factor for your special night to chance. Contact the professional party architects of magical musical mayhem, (pardon my alliteration) Arizona’s premier party band, Snake Eyes.
The story of Snake Eyes is the story of their front man and leader Don Marovich. Don started playing the guitar in the spring of his seventh grade school year. He worked to save about $30 doing odd jobs, got a department store acoustic guitar and started practicing every day. Before long, the first of many bands was formed and a musical journeyman was on his way.
Don’s musical influences included a wide variety of styles. In short, if Don liked it, he learned to play it. In addition to playing pop music, Don studied music theory formally for a year, sang in the school choir and studied some keyboard. A mandolin was acquired along the way and added to the list of stringed instruments he became proficient at including acoustic and electric six and twelve string guitars, the bass, and most recently the banjo.
In high school, Don, influenced by his father, sang with the Indiana barbershop group The Chorus of the Dunes and competed internationally. This experience was formative and it was through the barbershoppers that Don came to love and be proficient at singing and hearing harmonies. That influence has stayed with Don throughout his music career and vocal harmonies are a staple component of all the groups he has performed with.
Don started a pop band called “Justin Tyme” in the seventies. Around 1987 the name changed to Snake Eyes and that has been the name ever since. The band is based in the Phoenix area. In the eighties, Don’s band was the subject of a one hour music special that aired in thirty six states on ABC television.
Don worked as a solo singer on and off throughout his career and around 2005 started pursuing his solo project in earnest doing engagements at major resorts and country clubs in and around Arizona. In 2009, an eclectic collection of original songs was recorded and the album release was entitled “All I Can Do.”
One would think two major musical endeavors would be enough, but in mid 2012, Don was offered a position with the classic folk group called “The Limeliters” and that third musical project, which finally boosted Don to a national stage, is now well underway. All of Don’s musical influences and talents come into play in the traditional folk genre. He calls it a “string thing’ and there is no cure for this habit.
Snake Eyes’ list of musical accomplishments and former clients is one any aspiring musician would be proud of. They have played all the major resorts and country clubs in the Phoenix area and others beyond from the west coast to the Rockies. The best part of all is that the journey is still underway and the final chapters have yet to be written.
